The Content of Religion – and the Failure of the Church

THE CONTENT OF RELIGION, AND THE FAILURE OF THE CHURCH

Why did the church fail to reform?
– anti-intellectualism.
– superstition rather than myth.
– peasant rather than middle class
– agrarian rather than industrialism
– suffering rather than heroism and possibility.
– Semitic rather than European.

Why did the church fail to produce a reformer?
– why no Augustine, or Luther?
– why was Smith/Hume/Jefferson insufficient?
– why no accommodation for Darwin, Menger, Maxwell, Durkheim, Nietzsche?

The answer:
Too much of a change. The academy took possession away from the church. The academy took funding away from the church. The state took all lands from the church.

My response:
Then it might have been possible if not for the world wars and communism. However, the germans were very close. The british traditionalists were very close. The church could have seized the opportunity, or it could have defeated the opposition: marxism. But it did neither. It was LAZY AND INTELLECTUALLY INCOMPETENT.

As far as I know, all that matters in a religion is:

(a) a community setting where individual expression prohibited. (signal free environment)
(b) a very simple set of comprehensible laws (strategy)
(c) a method of achieving mindfulness, and excuse for it.
(d) recitation of myths, legends, history, heroes
(e) application of past wisdom to current issues.
(f) participatory rituals (praying, singing, moving).
(g) participatory holidays ( relief – vacation days )
(h) participatory feasts (special holidays – family)
(i) participatory festivals (sports, plays, games)
(j) an institutional means of transference of all of the above between generations. (profession)

The acts matter much more than the words. The acts produce the experience. The words JUSTIFY it.

THE CHURCH WAS SO HEAVILY ANTI INTELLECTUAL IT ABANDONED THE PEOPLE TO THE PROFIT SEEKING OF THE ACADEMY, THE PROFIT SEEKING OF THE STATE, THE PROFIT SEEKING OF THE FINANCIAL SECTOR, AND HID AMONG THE DEVELOPING WORLD’S POOR.

  1. Sorry, but no. The Church is a diplomatic mission from God to those that would have their immortal soul saved from damnation. Her mission is to make available the peace terms offered by God to rebel fallen man, then to provide the means by which the rebellious soul can keep and confirm the peace treaty made, thus ending the rebellion.

    It simply is not Her concern whether or not any scientific discoveries are made. Certainly She is not opposed to such endeavors. She just isn’t going to give carte blanche. That doesn’t make Her “heavily anti-intellectual”. In deed the very foundation of science is a commitment to the idea of an orderly universe. Exactly what the Catholic Church teaches.

    All that you are really saying is that Her priorities do not match with yours. So what? Don’t universalize your priorities.

    That’s your dictum isn’t it?

    Good sir, you are simply living in too small a universe. Vast portions of creation are simply unseen by circumscribed, contingent, fallen man.

    We must take into account that what you value as science is in the same situation as the USA founding fathers found themselves in: a republic, if you can keep it. How did that work out? Not so good. Science, as you conceive it, is much the same way. Can you keep it? Will it prove a failure? Will it end up putting nuclear reactors on an active fault line with insufficient safeties, get hit by a tsunami (in the very country we get the name for such things from!!!) and kill the entire Pacific Ocean.

    Oh, wait, that happened. Way to go science.

    Remind me, why were you kvetching about the Church supposedly “framing”. You want me to think that’s bad? No.

I value the ability to eradicate the lies and falsehoods that have defeated by people in the 19th and 20th century given the enfranchisement of women and the underclasses in a period of absurd prosperity made possible by the expansion of marxism, the suicide of europe, the expansion of the american west, and the proceeds of industrialization, electricity, and petroleum products.

    My people were forced into christianity and suffered a dark age for it. My people have been forced into Marxism in all its forms (Christianity 2.0), and will suffer a dark age for it. How can I defeat Christianity 2.0 (Marxism), without also defeating christianity 1.0 Justinian’s Judaism, and preventing any further dark ages for my people, without preventing ALL lies past and present?

    There are many gods. I talk to mine all the time. But the god of the Persians, Semites, and Egyptians is a despot who is powerless yet commands our submission. Whereas our western gods never dreamed of lying to us that they had dominion, or that they could demand submission – only gifts in return for favors.

    The church is dead. God is dead. What will we do now to create a new church of Europa?
