Welcome to The Choice – Episode 0019 – Anchored by Our First Institutions – We Were All Wrong – Our Germanic Origins Part One – I’m Curt Doolittle.
Trust is my favorite of Francis Fukuyama’s works, but I’ve just finished reading his other two wonderful works, OOPO(origins of political order) and POPD (political order and political decay) for the fourth time. And he very nearly solved the problem he sought to. Similar to Hayek in Law and Popper in science, or Bridgman and Brouwer in math, he came very close.
The problem that plagued all thinkers in the 20th was the same: becker’s economics of human behavior, cognitive science, and understanding of computation and neural networks came too late: Babbage didn’t provoke a revolution. So that everyone in the 20th wasn’t able to frame processes as operational calculations. We got stuck in philosophy and language – meaning idealism or platonism, rather than operations and computation – meaning realism.
And the left supplied an overwhelming production of pseudoscience and sophistry that made matters far worse.
That failing is the reason for the obvious failure by “mathiness” in economics and subatomic physics. Only slightly less obvious in psychology and sociology. Far less so in law. And not at all intuitive in political development.
Worse, we got stuck on trying to pretend darwin, malthus, regression to the mean, and the red queen didn’t exist. we preteneded that with the industral revoulution and our departure from subsitence frarming, that the age of scarcity was over, that man was oppresed rather than domesticated, tahat man was moral rather than pragmatically amoral, and that man was malleable rather than biological machines with different capacities that are unalterable. Or taht intelligence and lower aggression wasn’t simply the rate of cognitive adaptation as a continuation of natureal selection.
So civilizations like any information system are anchored by their first institutions. There are only three means of coercion so only three sets of institutions: force and the state, remuneration and the law (tort), and ostracization vs inclusion (religion).
So India couldn’t overcome the demographics so was struck in fiction (religion). The Semites tried to convert religion to law but couldn’t form states. China could build a state and secular wisdom literature, but not the law. The west developed militia and law, later state.
But the ‘middle class’ west failed at religion and that was its vulnerability.’Upper class’ China’s vulnerability was entrepreneurship.’Lower class’ Semitia’s vulnerability was entrepreneurship and States. And India vulnerable to everything but her demographics(islam would win).
So under these conditions groups can ‘calculate’ the discovery adaptation to and application of ideas faster or slower. And under that computational ability, we would see, Semitic civilization hyperconsume and decline but still expand (it did).
Indian civilization reach equilibrium set by the geography (it did). Chinese civilization reach limits and convert to moralizing rather than religion (it did).
And europeans, by LEAPFROGGING the religious and state phases, (yes that’s the point) developed the rule of law at the top, and rule of law is the fastest system of innovation possible for man. Realism, naturalism, operationalism, self-determination, by sovereignty and reciprocity adversarially settled in a market competition we call the court by the test of tort (trespass) CALCULATES. and calculates with almost zero friction.
Rule of law systematically calculates the immediate suppression of error, fraud, deceit, and harm (irreciprocity) on the one hand and deprives ‘shareholders’ (citizens) of any means of survival other than the market (and of course, pillaging the enemy).
This is the most adaptive political order possible – under the condition that you treat those unable to compete in it as domesticated animals (slaves, serfs, freemen). And this is the price europeans had to pay: soft eugenics.
And only Europe and China paid those prices (china by credit, europe manorialism). And china’s only failure was not developing rule of law. Europe’s failure is that entrepreneurialism (wealth pursuit) was not constrained like the Chinese – who were ‘ahead’ of neighbors.
So where Chinese reached out to the world and found it lesser, Europeans reached out to the world and saw the opportunity for more ‘profit from the domestication of man’. The difference is, that outgroups can’t be domesticated. and Europeans always failed.
They failed in the ancient world and they failed in the modern world, and while replacing the siberian-americans, are being replaced just as the indo-Iranians and the Persians have been replaced and to the same negative consequences.
So my point here is that the optimum political order and economic order is the one china has taken, which is the very long term (at least 100 years), ethnocentrism, ethnocentric nationalist military, strong state, professional bureaucracy seeking the best executive talent where the state absorbs labor necessary to produce commons, and a rule of law of reciprocity economy, for the exploitation of opportunities for consumption, while regulating the population to semi-autarkic limits of the geography.
So the unpleasant lesson is that (despite my libertarian origins) is that Fascism won the debate of the 20th. The french revolution destroyed the core of europe: the holy roman empire’s federation of states under customary law of tort, that French division of powers, continental liberalism, ‘positive law’, ‘continental law’ meritless democracy, meritless access to political power, large states, open borders, multiculturalism all undermined the strong state (rule of law, constitutional monarchy), meritocratic houses of the classes as a market for the production of commons. Undermined the tolerance of an homogenous ethnocentric polity to redistribute and sacrifice, undermined their ability to appeal to the state, eliminated juridical defense against the state, Created a military that is in fact subject to the same ‘mercenary’ division of interests as has caused the collapse of the roman legions. Access to political power that has brought the Bolshevic Revolution to the west; Created a cult of social and psychological pseudoscience; created an invasion no different from the Germanic invasion of the Roman Empire, or the Muslim invasion of the great civilizations of the ancient world; and brought about a conflict like that of the Roman republic and effectively doomed western civilization.
Because as every student of political history knows quite well, political groups make bad decisions, for no other reason than the competition between groups. Authoritarian organizations make mistakes too. It’s the adversarial competition between state, market, and family – Regulating state, market, and family participants to ‘living within their means’ that maintains the balance of power, and it is only rule of law of tort that can be used to measure that balance.
So in other words, despite my Jeffersonian instincts, and my specialization in economics and law, this means everyone is wrong. Everyone failed. Because the problem is the downward expansion of unregulated reproduction in the absence of natural selection a natural selection which is at the state level, if not the civilizational level. With Islam the bacterial that consumes the waste, and has the most ignorance producing, and dysgenic (devolutionary) effects by design.
